Room 26 Crew Families! How about that bit of sunshine we got today. Finally! We raise kids who love to go outside, so after being cooped up for the past week, you'll be happy to know that after a chance of a little rain tomorrow the forecast looks like mostly sunshine for the next few weeks! As you may have heard, parts of the walkways flood on rainy days so it's always a great idea to send them in boots when it rains so they're ready for the elements :) Here's what's going on this week: ANNOUNCEMENTS
WHAT ARE WE EXPLORING THIS WEEK? Here's a little bait to get your learner talking about the day :)
TEACHING TIP OF THE WEEK This research/genius project will offer successes and failures along it. All part of learning! Your learners will learn when topics are too broad or too narrow. They'll learn to take notes. They'll learn to transfer notes. They'll learn to write a bibliography. They'll learn to dissect non-fiction texts. Ask them what they're learning about their topic and perhaps help them hone in on subtopics that may intrigue them through simple dinner conversations :)

WHAT ARE WE EXPLORING THIS WEEK? Here's a little bait to get your learner talking about the day :)
TEACHING TIP OF THE WEEK With all the media outlets and places to get information these days, young learners are finding it tougher and tougher to differentiate paid content from fact from opinions and more! As you watch the news coverage and/or come across commercials/pieces of literature that fall in these categories, have an open conversation with your learner about how to differentiate! While it won't be a one and done lesson, it's great for them to have exposure and start being able to peel back the layers. Room 26 Crew Families!
Happy New Year! How exciting it was to see your learners again today and hear what they did over break! They seemed excited to be back and share stories with friends :). Here we go--last semester of 5th grade! ANNOUNCEMENTS

TEACHING TIP OF THE WEEK We're heading into fractions next week! Start finding fractions in real life (egg cartons, dinner plates, desserts, restaurants, while cooking, etc.). Look for parts of wholes then talk about equivalent fractions--try this by cutting sandwiches into smaller parts to show equivalence! Brush up on multiplication facts to help. Room 26 Crew Families!
I hope you all enjoyed the fireworks last night! I wasn't able to make it this year, but always remember the night fondly as that's the night Mr. Gross & I got engaged a couple trips around the sun ago :). I hope you all shared happy memories last night as well! We have one full week, then one four day week before our last day (Thursday, 12/22). The holiday spirit is high in Room 26! Somehow, some way we'll make it to next Thursday ;) Please read on below for a few announcements: ANNOUNCEMENTS

TEACHING TIP OF THE WEEK Ask your learner what he/she thinks the theme of the book they are reading is. If they have trouble identifying THE MEssage the author is trying to teach the reader, encourage him or her to go back into his Reader's Workshop and see if one of the universal themes we noticed apply to their book. Ask them to support WHY they think it's the theme/message. Room 26 Crew Families!
Let's first get excited about something I know you ALL have been talking about since the weekend....Penn State is going to the Rose Bowl!! ;) This Nittany Lion over here is excited :) I look forward to bringing the year to a close with your learners. I know during this time of year there never seem to be enough minutes in the hours or hours in the day, but I hope you find time for smiles, laughs and good cheer! It'll be a busy next three weeks here in Room 26. Please read on for some updates... ANNOUNCEMENTS

TEACHING TIP OF THE WEEK Encourage your learner to measure things around the house, converting from inches to feet to yards and vice versa as well as utilzing the metric system and conversations (mm, cm, m). The more hands on practice they get, the more it makes sense! Room 26 Crew Families!
I hope you all had a wonderful break with your families and friends. The kids were excited to come back and share their stories this morning. As a reminder, we're dismissing at 12:40 all week and there is NO lunch service, so please have your learner pack a large snack to get through the day. Reading assessment time reminders are in the first bullet below. Thank you for showing up 5 min prior to the sign up time and for keeping the slot you signed up for. Have a great week! ANNOUNCEMENTS

I wanted to thank you all for sharing your time, ideas and goals for your learners at conferences. It was so productive to be able to meet face to face and I thank you for your collaboration and input. Lots of good information in this week's edition, so I'll get started! ANNOUNCEMENTS

Here's a reminder of your time: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090e4eadaf22a6fb6-goal Thank you for your punctuality as we power through each conference. You may wait on the patio side until we are ready to begin.
